Trip fuel cost: estimate what a drive costs

Estimate what a trip costs in fuel: enter distance, consumption and the price at the pump, and get the total spend plus the litres or gallons burned.

How it works

Distance converts to kilometres, consumption converts to litres per 100 km using the inverse formulas, and litres follow from distance × L/100 km ÷ 100. Price per litre multiplies litres directly; per gallon, litres are converted to the right gallon first.

  • Consumption accepts L/100 km, km/L, mpg (US) and mpg (UK); the conversion is exact, including the inverse relationship at low consumption.
  • Results are an estimate: real consumption depends on speed, load, terrain and driving style.

Why it matters

Fuel is a recurring cost that is easy to underestimate. A quick estimate before a long drive, or a comparison between two cars, changes route and vehicle decisions far more than a difference of a few tenths of a litre per 100 km suggests.

A worked example

A 450 km trip at 6.5 L/100 km uses 29.25 litres. At 1.65 per litre the fuel costs 48.26; a round trip doubles both to 58.5 litres and 96.52.

Common mistakes

  • Using mpg as if it were proportional to L/100 km.
  • Mixing a per-gallon price with litres used.
  • Forgetting that round trips double fuel and cost.

Practical tips

Add 5-10% to the estimate for traffic, air conditioning and a loaded car. If you are comparing two routes, calculate both in the same units and include tolls separately; fuel is rarely the deciding cost on short trips.

Common questions

How is the trip cost calculated?

Distance converted to kilometres, multiplied by consumption in L/100 km, then by the fuel price. A round trip doubles the distance.

Which consumption units are accepted?

L/100 km, km/L, mpg (US) and mpg (UK). The inverse conversions follow the standard formulas.

Which currency is used?

None. The result is a plain amount based on the price you enter, so any currency works.

Is this tool really free?

Yes. There is no account, no paywall and no usage limit. Tools App is funded by aumenso, the studio behind it.

Is anything I enter uploaded?

No. The tool runs in your browser tab; what you enter is never sent to us and never stored.
